Mesa Redonda Virtual: Soluções para acabar com o casamento prematuro

Maputo, Mozambique - On June 30, 2020, the report entitled State of the World Population 2020 was released by UNFPA, the United Nations agency for sexual and reproductive health.

In Mozambique, UNFPA will accompany the launch of the 'State of the World Population 2020' report with a virtual live debate on July 15, which will provide an opportunity to bring together representatives of the Government, civil society, social activists and international partners to discuss child marriage and other harmful practices in the context of Mozambique. The discussion will offer diverse and complementary perspectives, addressing the social and cultural norms associated with child marriage, the impact of premature marriage on girls' lives, the costs to the community at large, and the legislative and programmatic interventions needed to eliminate this practice, including in the context of Covid-19. The main objectives of the event include:

  • Promote awareness of the prevalence, impact and challenges of premature marriage in Mozambique;

  • Help the Government and partners to identify the best way forward for programmatic interventions to empower girls and address the economic, social and cultural barriers that support premature marriage.
