As part of the festivities of World Population Day on the 11th of July, under the theme “Family Planning: Empowering People, Developing Nations,” UNFPA, as a partner of the Government of Mozambique, joined the efforts of the province of Cabo Delgado, led by the Governor, Ms. Celmira Silva. For this event, UNFPA, mobilized support from the private sector, PEP Mozambique, one of the largest retail companies with a strong commitment to community development. PEP Mozambique donated a large quantity of unsold clothing that was distributed to communities in need in the province.

UNFPA and its implementing partners for the project “Support to Cabo Delgado province to reduce the burden of maternal, neonatal and child mortality and morbidity,” which is fully funded by the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) of the Republic of Korea, have supported the event to increase the local awareness about family planning, available services and benefits to individuals, families and the community. In her opening speech, Governor Celmira Silva expressed the importance of access to information and services for sexual and reproductive health and rights and the need to include men and boys in related programs and activities. She reaffirmed the commitment from the Government to increase access to relevant information and services. During the event, 521 people received family planning services, 5307 condoms were distributed, a blood drive was conducted, 52 people conducted hypertension screening and 32 people got oral health screenings. Some clothes donated by PEP were distributed to children and adolescents at the Home of Hope Orphanage while the remaining clothes will be distributed to selected communities, along with family planning services, by the provincial government.
