Tropical Cyclone Chido made landfall in Mozambique on 15 December, causing significant devastation in Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces. As of 26 December, the National Institute for Natural Disaster (INGD) reports 120 fatalities, 868 injuries, and approximately 453,971 people affected.
The cyclone has exacerbated the risk of gender-based violence (GBV) due to factors such as inadequate lighting, insufficient gender-sensitive WASH services, overcrowded displacement sites with limited privacy, and restricted access to critical services, including healthcare, food, and shelter.
UNFPA Mozambique is actively responding to these challenges by focusing on addressing the heightened dangers of GBV and ensuring access to sexual and reproductive health services for women and girls in the affected areas.
