The theme of the 2023 annual results and Phase II report is “Amplifying Change: Harnessing Collective Power to End Child Marriage.” This report not only marks the achievements of 2023 but also serves as the conclusion of Phase 2 (2020-2023), emphasizing the collective efforts in successes and lessons learned in combating child marriage, even in the face of significant challenges.
In addition to the report, we are delighted to present 12 individual country summaries, offering in-depth insights into our initiatives and progress in specific regions: Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Mozambique, Nepal, Niger, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Yemen, and Zambia. Some notable achievements in Phase II include:
- More than 20 million girls were reached with life skills and comprehensive sexuality education.
- 2.9 million girls were supported to enrol in, return to, or remain in school.
- 66 million community members were engaged in dialogues and consensus-building on gender equality and alternatives to child marriage.
- 94 quality research and evidence products were produced on ending child marriage at country, regional and global levels.
- Global advocacy and technical support have increased the number of governments financing national action plans to end child marriage from 7 in 2018 to 33 in 2023.
- 904 partnerships to support social protection and girls’ economic empowerment were established.
Looking ahead, the priorities for the way forward focus on promoting gender equality and girls’ empowerment, adapting to crises and megatrends, and advancing the research and evidence agenda.
