Pemba - After Cyclone Kenneth, which hit Cabo Delgado, North of Mozambique, on April 25, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) is visiting affected areas to serve women and girls.

"We are here in one of the accommodation centers in Pemba working with the government to help the people affected by Cyclone Kenneth. UNFPA will carry out a series of actions for the health and dignity of women, especially pregnant women," said Ingo Piegeler, UNFPA humanitarian coordinator.

According to the Mozambican government, 250,000 people were affected, including about 10,000 pregnant women. In the province of Cabo Delgado, there are 10 accommodation centers to shelter the people left without their homes. Among the most affected areas are Metuge, Mecufi, and Ibó.

"My house was destroyed and that is why I came here with my three children, there is nothing left, not even food. And here we do not have meals at the right time, breakfast is served at midday, lunch is at 6 or 9 pm. Another thing missing here is freedom. everyone is in the same place. Men, women, and children. This is not comfortable for us women," said Aifa, 23, who is sheltered at the Congresso 10 accommodation center in Pemba.

Beginning this Wednesday, UNFPA will distribute dignity kits (with safety and hygiene items) to women and girls in vulnerable situations, delivery kits, and kits for sexual and reproductive health and install tents that will support health centers.
