On Friday, the 23rd of June, 2017 a Programme to Enhance the Quality of the Midwifery Workforce in Tete Province was officially launched by Dr. Nazira Karimo Vali Abdula, the Minister of Health of Mozambique, with the presence of the following development partners: the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, H.E. Raul Raimundo Quiñones, the Head of the General Representatives of the Government of Flanders, Ms. Kaat Matthys, the representative of the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr. Djamila Khady Cabral, and the representative of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ms. Bettina Maas.
This Programme will be implemented over four years, from 2017 to 2020 and will draw upon the current South-South Cooperation between the Ministry of Health of Mozambique and the Ministry of Health of Cuba, through facilitation by UNFPA to increase the availability of a quality midwifery workforce. It will be fully funded by the Government of Flanders in the amount of 1,340,944 Euros. In order to achieve the two expected results, enhanced technical skills of teaching schools in Tete Province and strengthened competencies of Maternal and Child Health (MCH) nurses and Medical Technician students, holistic support will be provided to the Tete Training Institute. This will be achieved through technical assistance from Cuba; post-graduation courses for specialized nurses in Tete; upgrading the learning environment; as well as financial support for the initial training of 60 MCH nurses.
